The DFC is ringing in 2024!

Hello DFC Friends and Families -

As we reflect on 2023, The DFC has so much to be grateful for, and that is all because of YOU!  Our mission is to positively transform life with diabetes through the power of community, and YOU are our community.  YOU are the reason we host Camp Morris, Teen Retreats, and Family Retreats.  Thank you for trusting us with your children and your diabetes and for believing in our transformative community. We are grateful to all of you and can't wait to see you in 2024!

We hosted the largest Camp Morris EVER, with over 180 campers and over 90 staff. The week was filled with PMA, Teamwork, Community, and FUN!  We cannot wait to see all our campers back next summer for the best week of the year.  Registration for Camp will open in mid-February, and we will be launching a new platform that will make completing forms faster and easier.

We hosted two outstanding Fall Retreats, welcoming more than 100 people to participate in the fun of learning, leading, and supporting one another.  The 2024 Retreat dates will be released soon!

The DFC WON!

The BowStern Project Mayday Grant, offering us $100,000 in marketing support for 2024.  We look forward to partnering with BowStern as we reach new families, expand our community, and support more people and their families impacted by T1D.

Give the gift of PMA

Finally, we are finishing up our end-of-year campaign.  This campaign helps the DFC continue to have the successes listed above. As we reach more people, we will need more resources to support them on their T1D, so if it works for your budget, please consider a donation of any amount today and ask those you love to support the organization that transformed your life with diabetes. 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Lenoir-Rhyne University

Registration Opens January 14th at www.thedfc.org

The DFC's Camp to Community program is a one-day event that provides children aged 5-14 living with type 1 diabetes and their family members with fun, laughter, education, and community connection through recreational-based programming supported by diabetes care professionals. Our outstanding volunteer staff and medical counselors, most of them living with diabetes themselves, design activities that offer teachable moments about diabetes management, team problem-solving opportunities, and challenges that empower and build campers' confidence in themselves and their diabetes management and leadership skills. By offering children with diabetes the opportunity to experience camp, they learn from one another, build more authentic relationships with medical professionals, find role models in our staff, and make enduring friendships that last a lifetime.

We do not stop there. We offer families the opportunity to find resources in their area, learn from experts, and share their stories with each other. These authentic peer-to-peer connections build more resilient and cohesive communities that are based on trust, optimism, and compassion. The belonging and empowerment that participants feel at the end of a Camp to Community event transform lives and create a sustainable community that supports all those impacted by diabetes.

Individuals living with T1D are nominated to receive a PMA Airlift package by a parent, guardian, friend, family member or healthcare provider. The DFC receives the nomination, reviews the request, and assigns the airlift package to be filled by one of our dedicated PMA Airlift Volunteers. A fun box filled with resources, inspiration, and a personal note arrives at the nominee's door in a few short weeks. The package offers hope, support, resources, and a reminder that the recipients are not alone in the challenges of living with diabetes. Our DFC Community is here, and together - we can do anything!

June 9-15th

Camp Hanes - King, NC

Raising 3rd graders - raising Seniors

Registration Opens in February at www.thedfc.org

Camp Morris is the DFC’s flagship program and largest event of the year by far.  We are North Carolina’s largest residential diabetes summer camp and serve approximately 200 campers annually! Kids and teens living with diabetes will be welcomed to YMCA Camp Hanes in King, North Carolina, the week of June 9th. During this week, campers will experience an independent camp program chock-full of excitement, friendship, teachable moments, and opportunities to be challenged by choice. Campers are supervised by experienced counselors (many of whom are living with diabetes themselves) who are trained at “meeting campers where they’re at,” using teachable moments throughout the week to promote healthy, age-appropriate independence in diabetes management. Campers are supported by counselors and cared for by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals from across the state of North Carolina, including Atrium Health, Novant Health, Wake Baptist, Cone Health, UNC Health, and Duke Health.  The Mission and Vision of the Diabetes Family Connection is the heart and soul of this outstanding week-long camp session.

October 2023 DFC Newsletter

Happy Diabetes Awareness Month

Hello, DFC Families, Friends, and Volunteers

In just a few short days, we will kick-off National Diabetes Awareness Month. November will be filled with statistics, stories of resilience, and the power of people like you balancing the daily challenges of managing blood sugars while living your best life.

The DFC knows that this balance is not easy. We all struggle with the constant decision-making, the influx of blood sugar data on our phones or watches, the calls to order supplies, doctor appointments, and so much more, but we also know that we are not alone. The DFC community is here to offer a community filled with supportive people who can help us find the PMA, Positive Mental Attitude, in every situation. So, this month, instead of adding to the decision-making and the information overload, we will celebrate National Diabetes Awareness Month by doing what we do best … Share the stories of a community focused on our values and making the best of living with type 1 diabetes.

If you would like to share your story of PMA, Teamwork, Community, or Belonging, please reach out to Emily Barger at emily@thedfc.org. We would love to share your story as part of Diabetes Awareness Month.

PMA It Forward Campaign

Between now and December 31st, you have the power to transform lives by giving the gift of PMA to others through our annual PMA it Forward giving campaign. Be a part of the PMA movement with a contribution that will help us serve more people, offer new programming, serve those who need it most, and empower our community to thrive.

We encourage our community to join the conversation and share important messages with their community and followers. By leveraging your individual networks, you have the power to spark a dialogue on the importance of The Diabetes Family Connection and its impact across individuals and communities. The attached campaign messaging guide contains recommended ways to share our story.

We also challenge you to spread PMA by sharing a different PMA It Forward Feature every day throughout the month of November, highlighting how that individual has had a positive impact on your life! It is scientifically proven that showing gratitude can support greater health, happiness, and wisdom in ourselves and our communities.  When sharing your PMA It Forward Feature, use this template, tag @thediabetesfamilyconnection, and include our fundraising link

Fall Retreat Fun

The weekend of October 13-15 the DFC hosted its 3rd Fall Retreat. It was full of learning, friendships, teamwork, love, and PMA - for both the families and the teens. The family fall retreat included making PMA gardens, high ropes, field games, important discussions, a chance to connect with other T1D families, and so much more. The teens spent a lot of time working on their leadership and teamwork skills by taking the initiative throughout the weekend leading their peers. They organized and performed skits for the families around the campfire, conquered the low ropes course, participated in team-building games, and were challenged to teach their peers something new, all while also growing their connections with each other.

Time at camp is always special, but especially when time is short. Whenever you leave camp, you are able to leave with more love in your heart and a reassuring feeling that you can deal with everything on your plate. We were ecstatic to see new friendships forming between the kids at the family and teen retreat while also seeing the parents find a community of people who are all going through the same thing. Thank you to all those who came, and we hope to see you all again soon!

August 2023 DFC Newsletter

AUGUST 2023

It is hard to believe that the summer is almost over and that we are preparing to return to school, enjoy cooler temperatures, pull out our favorite DFC hoodies, and head back to Camp Hanes for the Fall Retreats. We can’t wait to see you all again soon, but until then, we wanted to send along some great tips to start your school year and update you on all the DFC has to offer this fall.

Tips for heading back to school

  1. PMA - Positive Mental Attitude! Every new beginning is exciting but also a little scary.  So remember to keep PMA top of mind.  To help you do that, reach out to a camp friend, create a daily intention, take a walk in the woods, or spread PMA by making a new friend a friendship bracelet.

  2. Teamwork - Everybody needs a team. Remember that your team is there to cheer you on, help you find the courage to try new things, and support you when things are more challenging than expected.  It is a great idea to sit down before school starts and make a list of your teammates, those people you can rely on no matter what. Then, reach out to them, start a group text to support one another, or reach out individually and let them know you are on their team and hope they are on yours. Helping others always feels great.

  3. Community - If you need a pick-me-up, remember you always have the DFC community. Check out our social media - Facebook Instagram,  register for the Teen or Family retreat (details below), or post your questions and concerns in our Parent Facebook group to get great, honest, real-life advice from your DFC family.

  4.  Resources to help you at school

REGISTER TODAY FOR THE TEEN RETREAT  - Spots are filling fast!

Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in High School will LOVE our Teen Retreat. Over the course of the weekend, teens will have the opportunity to take part in team-building activities, discuss and tackle teen-specific issues, and have loads of fun hanging out with other teens and supervised by experienced counselors (many of whom are living with diabetes themselves) and a dedicated team of healthcare professionals. For more information about Teen Retreats and to register, click here.

REGISTER TODAY FOR THE FAMILY RETREAT

This annual event has taken off over the last couple of years.  Our family retreat allows families of children with diabetes, including parents and siblings, to share the camp experience. With active programming for the kids throughout the day, along with activities and learning opportunities for their parents, our Family Retreat is growing in popularity.  Family Retreat allows parents to share and network with other parents going through similar experiences with their children and helps foster a sense of community and a support system that families can rely on for years.  We are mindful to keep both groups (parents and kids) engaged separately to allow free expression of their thoughts and concerns.  We also program special activities to build family memories that our attendees cherish forever. For more information about Family Retreats and, click here.
